Survey Says Covid-19 Creates Additional Stress To Lawyers

With the stresses of maintaining a law firm, managing the needs of attorneys, legal staff members, and clients amid a global pandemic and civil unrest, it is important to find ways of delegating tasks, in order to gain some semblance of peace of mind.

Breaking down stress and lawyers

The Association of Corporate Counsel recently conducted a survey, analyzing the stress issues that lawyers may be dealing with during the COVID-19 pandemic. The survey was summarized in a recent Law.com article.

According to the survey, 74 percent of participating attorneys feel that their profession has had a negative impact on their mental health. Related to those results, 44 percent of the attorneys use alcohol to deal with stress, 64 percent feel that they suffer from anxiety, 31 percent feel that they are depressed, and 18 percent have contemplated suicide at some point in their careers.

The stresses of work do not end with the work itself. According to the survey, 74 percent feel that their work environment contributes to the negative impact.

The survey highlights an issue that contribute to the stresses and mental health issues that attorneys may have: control. A global pandemic changes workflow and is outside of the control of an attorney, forcing them to work remotely, to use video conferencing applications, and to rely on the assistance of others.
